This annual showcase is an opportunity to enjoy performances from some of the most talented young musicians from around the world who are studying at our local conservatoire in Cardiff. Violinist Sanne Heaven is the recent winner of the coveted Concerto Prize and this year’s line-up once again features Stephanie Cheung (‘whose fingers fly over the keys with brilliant fluidity, whether it is Bach or Shostakovich’ - Somerset County Gazette). Stephanie was born in Hong Kong and started taking piano lessons at the age of three; she has since won prizes in competitions and festivals both in Hong Kong and the UK. While she enjoys playing a wide range of solo repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary, Stephanie is also a dedicated chamber musician and accompanist who has  performed in prestigious venues in London, Italy and Hong Kong.

Among other works, the varied and exciting programme will include:

Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor Op 25
(Sanne Heaven, violin; Sam Wilson, viola, Derin Topgul, cello, Stephanie Cheung,
piano).

Shostakovich Cello Sonata Op 40 (Mvts. 1 & 2)
(Lilly Willcocks, cello and Ray Chi, piano).

Brahms Piano Quartet is a monumental work that culminates in the fast, furious and rhythmical fourth movement - nicknamed the Gypsy Rondo. This thrilling finale remains one of the most difficult movements to perform in all of Brahms' chamber music and is a fitting conclusion to this wonderful piece. The Cello Sonata in D minor by Shostakovich was composed during 1934, a period of emotional turmoil in his personal life which is reflected in the powerful impact of the music.

Supporting the development of young professional musicians is an important part of Wye Valley Music’s mission. We value our partnership with the Royal Welsh College and welcome the opportunity each year to hear stars of the future put through their paces. So do come and join us to hear Sanne, Stephanie and some of the other best players in college on violin, cello, viola and piano as they embark on their professional careers.
